EGAN: 'MCFADDEN'S NOT REJOINING WESTLIFE'!
Posted on 17 Oct 2011 by webmaster

Westlife star Kian Egan has silenced rumours the Irish boyband is set to reunite with former member Brian Mcfadden, insisting it's "not going to be".

MCFadden left the Flying Without Wings hitmakers to pursue a solo career in 2004 and the group has continued to achieve chart success as a foursome.

Recent reports suggested Westlife were preparing to welcome MCFadden back into the band - but Egan has moved quickly to dismiss the claims altogether.

Taking to his Twitter.com blog on Monday (17Oct11), the singer writes, "All the rumours about Brian re joining Westlife are un true. We have been a 4 piece for too long now. We love Brian but it's not going to be. That includes any tv performances."

This kind of love
Is more than a lifeline
For a man as weak as me
Who has no self belief

This kind of love
Is more than amazing
For a man who lost his way
Who thought it was too late

How did the sea
How did the sea
How did the sea get so rough

I would've drowned
I would've drowned
If you hadn't given me your love

{Chorus}
You're the light in the dark
You're the seat in the park
You're the lighthouse
You're the lighthouse
That I need

You're the key to the door
You're the port in the storm

And I need to find a shore
When I can't swim anymore
You always guide me back to solid ground
You're my lighthouse...

This kind of love
Is more than a feeling
For a man who rarely tried
I get all choked up each time

You say you love me
You could've walked away
Could've give my problems back
Could've left you took the chance

How did the waves
How did the waves
How did the waves get so high

I would've died
I would've died
If you hadn't loved me just in time

{Chorus}
You're the light in the dark
You're the seat in the park
You're the lighthouse
You're the lighthouse
That I need

You're the key to the door
You're the port in the storm

When I need to find a shore
Cos I can't swim anymore
You always guide me back to solid ground
You're my lighthouse...

Yeah, I owe it all to you everything I have right now
I owe it all to you everything I didn't have you found
Everytime, take me back to you...

{Chorus}
You're the light in the dark
You're the seat in the park
You're the lighthouse
You're the lighthouse
I need

You're the key to the door
You're the port in the storm
And I need to find the shore
Cos I can't swim anymore
You always guide me back to solid ground
You're my lighthouse...

WESTLIFE singer Kian Egan is to play a starring role on RTE's new talent show.

The Irish Independent has learned that the 31-year old is to be a vocal coach on 'The Voice Of Ireland' when it comes to TV screens early next year.

Programme sources have said that the star is perfect for the role as not only is he a member of one of the world's biggest pop bands, but he also has experience of band management.

"Kian realised that the huge amount of experience he has in the music business could be of great use to any aspiring singer trying to get a break," a programme insider said.

Until recently the Westlife vocalist was co-managing his wife Jodi Albert's girlband Wonderland but the group split last month after being dropped by their record label.

The Irish Independent has also learned that Belfast born Brian Kennedy is to be another coach on the programme.

Egan and Kennedy will be joined by fellow coaches Sharon Corr and former Blizzards singer Niall Breslin aka Bressie.

Irish boy band Westlife halted a show in Indonesia this week (beg03Oct11) amid fears hysterical fans would be crushed or trampled to death.

The Flying Without Wings hitmakers are touring the Far East and jetted into Indonesia for a show in the capital Jakarta, but they were forced to leave the stage for half an hour during the concert on Wednesday (05Oct11) so security chiefs could make sure fans were safe amid fears of a fatal crush building up in the crowd.

In a post on his Twitter.com blog, singer Kian Egan writes, "We had to stop our show in Indonesia for 30 min for the safety of our fans. We feared someone would die. Thankfully no one did."

WORLD EXCUSIVE: BEHIND THE SCENES OF WESTLIFE'S LIGHTHOUSE
Posted on 09 Oct 2011 by webmaster
0 Comments

IT'S 6am and the sun is rising over the stunning South African landscape.

In the pre-dawn light, the sight is incredible.

Baboons peer inquisitively at us, a zebra roams lazily across the plain and looming into view in front of us is the unmistakeable sight and sound of.... Westlife.

The manband can't believe their luck to be here in this glorious wilderness to shoot a video for their new single Lighthouse.

They're so thrilled they invited the Daily Star to exclusively catch all the behind-the-scenes action.

The breath-taking backdrop is the Cradle of Humankind heritage site in Gauteng, an hour north of Johannesburg. But the lads chose it because they were literally just passing.

THE LADS ADMIRE THEIR SURROUNDINGS

"We were in South Africa anyway as part of our Africa and Asia tour so we thought: 'Why not film the new video here too?'" says Nicky Byrne, 32.

Bandmate Mark Feehily, 31, explains: "Record companies aren't spending the millions they used to on videos. "We wouldn't want to do a rubbish video in a studio. And why should we when we can have a million-dollar backdrop like this for free?"

The Irish hunks, who have had a whopping 14 UK No 1 singles in 14 years, are not fazed by their environment, even though it contains some of the deadliest creatures on Earth.

"We have a medic here carrying a pack of anti-venom for snakes and spiders and other first aid," adds Mark. "We've even got a helicopter on standby in Jo'burg that can get here in under seven minutes should we have any emergencies."

KIAN AND MARK PREPARE FOR THEIR CLOSE-UP

But the cheeky lads are clearly not worried about the dangers. While Shane Filan, 32, films his solo alongside a picturesque river, Mark and Kian Egan spot a wooden canoe and gleefully decide to test-drive it.

"Come and do your interview on here," they beckon. But I refuse, frightened by the talk of crocodiles - and it's just as well.

Just seconds later the boat drifts into the back of Shane's shot and we hear a completely different type of wildlife - an angry director bellowing at the lads to get out of the way. Mark steers back to shore and tells us: "As soon as I got in I regretted it. Water started leaking in."

He confesses it's not the first prank that's misfired. "We've already delayed the shoot by an hour," he admits. "Our van got lost after we stole the keys and the driver couldn't follow the one in front."

THE LADS TAKE A BREAK

But the jokes show just how happy and relaxed Westlife are. "We love it here," says Kian, 31. "We love coming back, the people are lovely, the weather's lovely. Just look around. It couldn't be more perfect."

However, he reveals that not all the lads have enjoyed every second.

"We don't have any phobias but Nicky had to scramble on his hands and knees over a bridge and he wasn't too happy about that," he laughs.

Nicky adds: "I don't care about bugs or heights but I was just too close to this river. I thought if I fall down now that's not too sensible so I crawled across. But Mark just hopped over in one - he didn't care."

SHANE IS FILMED SINGING NEXT TO THE WATER

Aside from the landscape and its animals, there's another reason the lads love coming to South Africa.

"We did a gig in Pretoria yesterday for around 15,000 people and the crowd were great," says Nicky.

"Playing to African crowds is so different. They have different favourite songs from the one back home. Mandy is a massive hit here, more than any other."

He continues: "The last video we filmed here was When You're Looking Like That back in 2000 so it's great to be back."

MARK RECORDING A SOLO FOR THE VIDEO

Westlife can't wait for next month's release of Lighthouse, which was penned especially for them by Take That main man turned X Factor judge Gary Barlow, 40.

Mark reveals: "Gary wrote it with John Shanks and they also wrote Patience for Take That, so we're con-fident we have a great song."

But isn't Gary a rival? "Some people might think he's the competition," says Nicky. "But we don't see it like that at all. It's kind of cool he's written for us."

Mark agrees: "I love the idea of Gary writing for us and throwing all the rules out the window."

NICKY, MARK, KIAN AND SHANE POSE FOR A SNAP WITH JENNIFER

The lads will follow their single with a new greatest hits album. They say there's a good reason why they've lasted so long.

“We've always realised how lucky we are," says Shane, 32. "We've never taken it for granted.

"Many bands split and then try to come back with a reunion, but apart from Take That it just hasn't worked for anyone."

"Some people don't realise what they've got till it's gone.

"We just never let it get away."

Westlife's new single Lighthouse is available on November 14 and their album, The Greatest Hits, is out on November 21.

WESTLIFE IS KING IN VIETNAMESE FANS' HEARTS!
Posted on 09 Oct 2011 by webmaster
0 Comments

After two rainy days under the impacts of typhoon Nesat, rain suddenly stopped on the afternoon of October 1, just several hours before Westlife’s Gravity tour. Thousands of fans flocked to the My Dinh Stadium to see their idols. Vietnamese fans had to wait for over a decade to see Westlife.

Westlife appeared at 8.10pm, when a small rain began. However, the stadium was very hot. Thousands of people shouted “Westlife, Westlife, Westlife”.

The band started the show by two songs “When You’re Looking Like That” and “World Of Our Own” in the shouts of encouragements.

In the 100-minute show with over 20 songs, among those from the latest album, Gravity, Westlife also performed some hit songs that have brought the boy-band to the list of the world’s most popular artists, including “My Love”, “Seasons In The Sun”, “You Raise Me Up” and “Flying Without Wings”.

The four singers - Mark Feehily, Nicky Byrne, Shane Filan and Kian Egan - made many young fans bursting into tears with their pieces of music and friendliness.

Almost all the audience turned on the flash lights of their mobile phones after being asked to
do so as the boy-band started to sing “You Raise Me Up”.

The four singers also had a very close interaction with audience by shaking hands with them, and Nicky and Kian even helped their fans take the photos by using their own digital cameras. Kian also asked the audience to shout out “Twinkle”, the nickname of his future child - his wife’s second pregnancy, so that he can record the view for the child.

Westlife kept the promise to their fans as not only showed off sweetest love songs, but also more exciting music with the cover of 5 songs, including Viva La Vida (Coldplay), Only Girl (Rihanna), The Time (Black Eyed Peas), Bad Romance (Lady Gaga) and I Predict A Riot (Kaiser Chiefs).

Different with fans’ prediction, Westlife invited not four but up to eight fans, including two girls from Sweden and Denmark, to sing “Beautiful Tonight,” not “My Love” with them.

They ended their Vietnam’s live concert with “What About Now” and “Uptown Girl”.

The show closed by a firework show, which raised the audience’s temper to the highest level. The show marked a great leap in organizing technology in Vietnam.

After the show ended, Nicky immediately logged on Twitter to share the 32-second clip he filmed the moment thousands of Vietnamese fans cheering up and singing along the hit “My Love”.

The four-man idol group said they decided to add “My Love” to their list, although it was not originally included after finding out before coming here that the song was their most popular song to local fans.

With their only one show in Vietnam, Westlife has really become “King of My Heart” in the heart of Vietnamese fans.

Nearly 10,000 people watched the show.

The band opened its show by two songs "When You're Looking Like That" and "World Of Our Own"

WESTLIFE BRINGS SWEET NOSTALGIA IN FOURTH MANILA CONCERT!
Posted on 09 Oct 2011 by webmaster

MANILA, Philippines – It was more than gravity that made Filipinos fall in love once more with boy band Westlife through their fourth Manila concert held Sept. 29 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The “Gravity Tour 2011” is surely one for the books, particularly to those who, as the Irish lads said, “got through grade school” listening to their hits that never goes old… even if the guys that recorded them did. Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, Kian Egan, and Nicky Byrne may be in their 30s now yet their connection to the Filipino audience remains as strong as when they started out in the late '90s, and even if it’s already their fourth concert here.

The jam-packed venue was filled with squeals, cheers, and colorful lights—even before the white curtain on the stage fell and revealed the group and even after they’ve left the platform—from the fans who sang their lungs out to their all-time favorite Westlife songs, as well as tracks from the group’s 11th studio album, “Gravity.”

Apparently, the feeling is mutual. The members of the million-record-selling boy band incessantly said their thanks yous to their beloved Filipino audience. Shane and Kian both declared that it was one of, if not, the best crowd they’ve had. And to cement that momentous event, Nicky and Kian took out their camera phones and captured videos of the crowd. It turned out, as the latter revealed, that they’re making a “video diary” for their family in Ireland.

In spite of the large venue, the concert felt intimate and personal. Westlife members know how to make their fans feel special. At one point during their spiels, the four chose four fans who had what they deem as the best banners, invited them onstage and dedicated their song “Beautiful Tonight” to them. Nicky also got the Filipino fans doing their own brand of a giant wave and at another point, singing “My Love” in a capella, which Nicky both filmed through his phone.

The four also made simple, personal gestures at their fans from time to time, such as waving and smiling at them. We caught Mark pick a rolled letter which a fan in the front area of the stage probably tossed to them. After quietly signaling each other, Mark discreetly tucked the letter in his pants’ pocket. Sweet.

It was apparently a nostalgic night for the fans, hearing the energetic three-song opener “When You’re Looking Like That,” “World Of Our Own,” and “What Makes A Man,” as well as the Westlife hits “Flying Without Wings,” “Seasons In The Sun,” and “My Love.”

Their 15-song set also included their versions of “Home,” “You Raise Me Up,” and an amusing and surprising medley of pop tunes, consisting of Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida,” Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In The World)”—the chorus of which Mark tweaked into “I’m gonna make you feel, like you’re the only girl in the world…”—The Black Eyed Peas’ “Time Of My Life (Dirty Bit),” and Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” (done with some Gaga-esque choreography).

Apart from singing clearly—and may we make special mention of Mark’s flair for improvisation which added a different spice to the songs—the boys also unleashed the signature dance moves characteristic among boy bands. That’s something we don’t see often nowadays, and probably that’s why the show became all the more enjoyable.

Westlife heeded the fans’ loud screams for an encore and performed “What About Now” and “Uptown Girl” before taking their final bow in what surely the fans hope not to be their last Manila show. Two hours watching a Westlife concert was indeed time well spent.

WESTLIFE: STILL HERE, RIGHT NOW!
Posted on 09 Oct 2011 by webmaster

MANILA, Philippines - Irish boy band Westlife revealed what may well be the most important keys to their enduring success: hit songs and unwavering passion for their craft.

"We love what we do, and we’ve always loved to be in a band, and we generally love being on stage,” related Westlife member Shane Filan to Bulletin Entertainment and other members of the media in a press conference on Sept. 29, hours before their "Gravity Tour" concert, their fourth show in the Philippines.

Other boy bands who are not presently as visible as this quartet can apparently take cues from the group, who, in their more-than-a-decade-spanning career ,has sold over 44 million records worldwide and made history by notching 14 number one singles in the UK chart.

Westlife, composed of Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, Kian Egan, and Nicky Byrne (their fifth member Bryan McFadden left the group in 2004), puts a premium on coming up with hit songs consistently, and credits the talented producers and songwriters that they have worked with. The boys themselves have tried their hands in songwriting, with Mark noting it as a “natural progression” for them.

Although Westlife started out with a very pop sound, the members eventually experimented with various genres such as jazz/standard (“Allow Us To Be Frank” in 2003) and covers (e.g. Daughtry’s “What About Now?” and Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl”). But for their 11th studio album, “Gravity,” the quartet delves into a more guitar-driven, more mature pop sound, as Mark noted.

Each of the members are at least 30 years old now (the conference’s host, MYX VJ Nikki Gil, even teased them, “you don’t look like you’ve aged!”), but apparently, their fans have stayed with them through the years, something that Westlife highly appreciates.

"We come to the Philippines and we get a response like this after many years... maybe we're doing something right," Kian enthused.

Their connection to their Filipino fans is a “magical experience” for Westlife that began 11 years ago in their first show in Manila, noted Feehily.

“We’ve come so far away from home and for everyone to knew our names, our family [and] our pet’s names… we’re glad,” said he.

Having been told that a lot of people, particularly in the presscon venue, grew up listening to their music, Nicky kidded, "That makes us feel old."

Nevertheless, he hopes that their accessible music would transcend generations--that even when their fans become parents, they'd get to share Westlife's music with their children.

Asked who they'd like to share the stage with in the future, the boys mentioned their fellow boy bands Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync. They also mentioned internationally-renowned Filipino acts Charice, whom Mark described as "world-class;" as well as boxing champ and Sarangani congressman Manny Pacquiao, whom they’ve invited to do a duet in their concert. However, as Nicky, the self-confessed “big Manny Pacquiao fan,” related, “It’s not gonna happen. He can’t get out of the training. Coach Freddie Roach won’t let him.”

WESTLIFE: STILL GOING STRONG!

Few boy bands have careers that can last beyond their debut singles. But Irish all-male vocal group Westlife has defied the odds by remaining in the music business for more than 13 years.

Despite the departure of Bryan McFadden in 2004, the original members -- Nicky Bryne, Mark Feehily, Kian Egan and Shane Filan -- continued to work together as Westlife.

Since the group’s debut in 1998, Westlife has released 10 multiplatinum albums, had 14 #1 hits in the UK alone, and sold over 44 million albums worldwide.

After eight years, Westlife returns to the Philippines for a special one-night concert this Thursday, Sept. 29, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

The concert is part of Westlife’s Gravity Tour to promote the group’s latest album of the same title.

The 46-city concert tour kicked off at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales on March 7. Since then, Westlife has performed in the Arabian Peninsula, Europe, Africa and Asia.

Westlife began the Asian leg of its tour last Wednesday with a jam-packed concert at the Shanghai Indoor Stadium in China. The group then performed in Guangzhou and Beijing before performing tonight (Sept. 27) at the Asia World-Expo in Hong Kong.

After that, the group will fly to the Philippines for the concert this Thursday, before heading off to Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia to continue the world tour.

The group will then cap the six-month tour with a concert at the Hwajung Gymnasium in Seoul, South Korea on Oct. 9.

For the concert this Thursday, Westlife promises to perform its chart-topping singles, including "When Your Looking Like That" and "Flying Without Wings," as well as their hit versions of "Seasons in The Sun" and "Uptown Girl." The group will also perform a medley of covers of current hit songs like Rihanna’s "Ony Girl (in the World), Black Eyed Peas’s "The Time (Dirty Bit)," and Lady Gaga’s "Bad Romance."

And if the group’s die-hard Filipino fans prevail, Westlife might perform their favorites like "Swear it Again," "If I Let You Go," "Fool Again" and "My Love."

WESTLIFE "CONFIDENT" OVER NEW SINGLE CO-WRITTEN BY GARY BARLOW!

Westlife have spoken bullishly about their new single Lighthouse, which has been written by Take That's Gary Barlow, claiming the X Factor judge has helped them 'throw all of the rules out of the window'.

Frontman of the Irish boyband Mark Feehily said of their comeback: 'Lighthouse was written for us by Gary with John Shanks. They wrote Patience for Take That so we're confident we have a great team behind our new song. I love the idea of Gary writing for us and throwing all the rules out the window.'

Feehily's bandmate Nicky Byrne added: 'Some people might think Gary would be seen as the competition but we don't at all. It's kind of cool he's written for us.'

Lighthouse will be an original track featured on the Louis Walsh-managed group's upcoming Greatest Hits album, along with standard Westlife tearjerker classics such as Flying Without Wings, World Of Our Own and Swear It Again.

Westlife have continued as a four-piece after Brian McFadden quit the band in 2004.

WESTLIFE FLIES TO BEIJING!

Thirteen years after coming under the spotlight, Irish heartthrobs Westlife show they can still hold their own in a pop, indie rock and Lady Gaga-saturated market, with their 11th studio album, Gravity.

On Sept 25, Nicky Byrne, Mark Feehily, Kian Egan and Shane Filan, will stop in Beijing on the Westlife Gravity World Tour 2011, to treat their die-hard fans to new songs as well as classic hits.

"The fans here are fantastic," gushes Filan, recalling their first concert in Beijing in 2006. "We remember how polite and respectful the audience was. We could see our fans singing along with us and it was very special. Just meeting lovely people and the different culture was a memory."

The album title Gravity came from a fan on Twitter and reflects the band's intention to be more serious about rock.

Grammy Award-winning producer John Shanks got everyone involved in the album's 12 tracks. The band members, who have had little chance to show off their songwriting skills, wrote four of its songs.

"We love original songs, (and) get very excited when we discover a new song. We really enjoy covering our own compositions," they say.

The album, they say, is "very contemporary".

"Our voices have matured and we feel it's a great representation of us now".

While winning music formulas have helped the band rack up chart success for more than a decade, what keeps them together, they say, is "respecting each other's space".

In their own time, Mark collects art, paintings and photographs, Kian loves surfing now that his house is by the beach, Nicky plays football and Shane loves golf.

"We are great friends but we all have partners and families. We also live in different parts of Ireland most of the time," Filan says.

With the new album and world tour, Westlife has taken their music and career to another level. "'We're all at least 30 years of age. We could all go home now and we'd be all right for the rest of our lives,' Feehily says. "So, if we are going to make more records, we want to do it well. Otherwise we don't want to do it at all."

Westlife will invite four audience members from the Stand F, to sing with them in their only show in Vietnam at the My Dinh National Stadium on October 1. However, the show producer did not disclose the names of the songs for fans.

Anh Tuan, the show organizer in Vietnam, said that Gravity Tour will have international quality. The stage will be built nearer with stands to enable singers to better exchange with the audience.

Vietnamese fans are preparing for the show. “Everyone, try to remember lyrics of all Westlife’s songs in case you are the lucky ones who have the chance to sing with them.” This is the call published on many online forums.

Westlife’s fan club in Hanoi, with hundreds of members, have discussed a plan to welcome their idols.

On Sunday, September 18, over 70 Westlife’s fans in Hanoi wore uniforms and showed their love to the band at many public sites.

The fan group in HCM City planed to fly to Hanoi three days before the show to see the Hanoi fan club and to welcome their idols at the Noi Bai airport.

The show tickets are now available at MegarStar Vincom, BooCity (Ba Trieu Street), Giang Vo Exhibition Center (Giang Vo Street), Ciao Café (Hang Bai Street) and My Dinh National Stadium.

WESTLIFE PROMISES FANS A MUSIC BLAST!

CELEBRATED Irish band, Westlife has pledged a two-day music blast for their Namibian fans on Friday and Saturday this week.

The band has confirmed that they will perform at the ‘Huisgenoot Hart van Windhoek 2011’ Festival that will be held at the SKW Grounds.

In a telephone interview with the Windhoek Observer last week, their spokesperson and band member, Shane Filan, said that because it will be the band’s first visit to Namibia, they intend it to make it memorable.

“Our Namibian fans should know that we are coming next Thursday (yesterday). We are going to have a fantastic show and enjoy ourselves,” Shane said.

Here are the extracts from the interview between Windhoek Observer (WO) and Westlife (WL):

WO: I guess this is your first time to come to Namibia? What do you know about the country and African artistic ability in general, and what are your expectations when you come here?
WL:
We have never been in Namibia before, so we do not know much about the country. We know that we have many fans there that we want to come and see the country. We are so excited and can’t wait to come to Namibia.

WO: You are the only act in British and Irish history to have their first seven singles go straight to Number 1, and have sold over 44 million records worldwide. You could be anywhere in the world, why did you choose to come to Namibia, rather than more lucrative markets?
WL:
We just got the idea to come to Namibia from our promoters. We have been trying to put music tours together for our African fans. Namibia became part of our tour and we are glad to be heading to Africa.

WO: Many parts of third world countries including sub-Saharan Africa are marred by conflicts and calamities. Many celebrities around the world have been contributing hugely to contain the situation. What’s your level of humanitarian advocacy and activities?
WL:
I know there is so much stuff going on in Africa. But we may help when it strikes. We don’t know much at the moment. But we can help whenever needed. For this tour, we just want to sing and make people happy. Through music, we make others happy and that is what we do best.

WO: When the band was formed in 1998 it had an original line-up that comprised Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Shane Filan and Brian McFadden (departed from the band in 2004). What are the challenges of singing in a group, and how have you managed to overcome them?
WL:
As a group, we are a team and we understand each other. Whenever any problem arises our understanding of one another make us solve the problem and get past it. Also, we are equal partners and everyone acts like one. We are partners in both good and bad. We have also been good friends for years. Above all, we are proud of what we do and our achievements and we have a love for music.

WO: Your first big break came in 1998 when you opened for the Boyzone and Backstreet Boys’ concerts in Dublin. Music industry executives claim that you have so far failed to penetrate US market because you didn’t maximise your relationship with the then most celebrated boy bands in the US. What’s your take?
WL:
Yes, that was our breakthrough. But I don’t think it was the right time to involve them further. Boyzone were not big by then but Backstreet were. After the breakthrough, we dedicated most of our time and energy to places where our music was popular especially in Europe and Asia. At that time, we needed to focus on where our fan base was located.

WO: In 2008, you were declared as Ireland’s ninth-richest celebrities under 30-years-old and 13th in general with 36 million Euros as a group. Yet, in 2009, you dropped to 16th richest Irish band with an estimated 8 million Euros each. Is competition in the music industry getting tougher, or is it that you are spendthrifts like many young rock stars?
WL:
To be honest we keep most of our issues (especially finances) private. It’s kind of obvious that we been successful but we have not been very clever with our finances. And you know, once you have money you get to help family members and friends, and take care of ourselves.

WO: The band broke an unexpected record of having the first seven singles debut at the top of the UK charts, tying with The Beatles and eclipsing Elvis Presley. However, in December 2000, you failed to secure your eighth chart-topper in a row in the UK and Ireland, and the band has no serious success stories since then. What’s the future according to Westlife?
WL:
Yes, since then we have had never had a major hit. But let’s not forget the amazing success in the music industry. We have been trying to change to keep up with the trend in music. Will still deliver and we are trying to get there.

Our Namibian fans should know that we are coming next Thursday (15 September). We going to have fantastic show and enjoy ourselves. See you. – elvismboya@yahoo.com

WESTLIFE STAR SHANE FILAN SELLS BOND CAR!

Westlife star Shane Filan fetched €398,000 for his James Bond 1964 Aston Martin, when it went under the hammer yesterday.

The silver DB5 4.2 litre sports saloon was driven by Sean Connery in the James Bond film Goldfinger and was auctioned off in the UK at the three-day Goodwood Revival motorsport and aviation event.

It was expected by auctioneers Bonhams that the car would fetch around €300,000, but it well exceeded expectations and was sold to a telephone bidder.

Sligo-born Filan, who is a car fanatic, bought the motor as a 30th birthday present to himself. However, he put it up for sale because he is always on tour and he won’t get a chance to use it.

The car remains the most famous off all the James Bond Aston Martins, having appeared in five movies out of the series.

LIVING THE WESTLIFE WAY!

“We know we can sing. That’s the easy part.”

That’s what Shane Filan said about Westlife, the boyband that helped pave the way for bands of the same genre, and that’s what they’ve been happily doing all these 14 years during which they sold over 44 million records worldwide, 14 of them No. 1 singles in the United Kingdom, making them the only artist with the most consecutive No. 1’s in the UK.

Minus Bryan McFadden who has gone solo, the remaining four Westlife guys — that is, Shane, 32; Kian Egan, 31; Mark Feehily, 31; and Nicky Byrne, at 33 the oldest of the group — are coming for a concert at the Araneta Coliseum next Thursday, Sept. 29, as part-promo for their latest album called Gravity, released locally by Sony Music.

“It’s a really good album,” said Nicky in an exclusive phone Conversation (again, the band agreed to talk only to one Philippine paper, The STAR). “It’s one producer. It’s one sound. Maybe it’s taken us 14 years to get there. But it doesn’t matter. We’re here now.”

And here they will stay, well-entrenched on top and unchallenged by the emergence of other bands.

Before he became a Westlifer, Nicky played professional football and represented Ireland at several underage competitions. He’s married to Georgina Ahern, his childhood sweetheart and they have fraternal twin sons named Jay and Rocco, four years old. Except for Mark, the two other members are married, too, and have kids of their own.

You and the other Westlife guys are coming to the Philippines for a concert on Sept. 29. Welcome back!

“We’re looking forward to it. You know, the Philippines has always been very welcoming to Westlife. Ever since we first went there in 1999, the people there have been so friendly to Westlife and I know that Westlife songs mean a lot to some people there.”

When you were here in 1999, you were new as a group.

“That’s right. We’ve been to the Philippines I think maybe four or five times for promo visits and we’ve done some concert visits. It’s a place that we do like to visit again and again. It’s been too long since we’ve been back, so we’re really looking forward to go back over there and to, you know, sing all our songs for the fans again. It should be very special.”

It has been 14 years since you were organized as a group. How has the Westlife music changed all these years, how did it evolve?

“I think that when you’re in a band like this and you enjoy doing it, you always try to improve the next album and make the songs better. At the same time, you don’t want to change too much because possibly one of the reasons why we’re still around is that we didn’t try and change our music. We’ve stuck to the formula and to what we know how to do best. People seem to like most of the pop songs that we make and that’s very important.”

What about you and the three other guys, how have you changed as persons all these years? I guess the way you look at life has changed a bit. Are you the same persons that you were 14 years ago?

“Well, we’ve certainly grown up. We are family men now. I’ve got children now. The way you look at life does change a little bit as you grow older. This is actually our 14th year, would you believe…I couldn’t believe that we’ve lasted this long.”

Wow, that’s a long time!

“Yeah, it has been a long time! And we’re enjoying every minute of it. We have a greatest-hits album this year and this is why we’re going to the Philippines to sing all the songs on it. We’re inviting all those people who used to be Westlife fans and who are still Westlife fans to come and enjoy the concert with us.”

Oh, I’m sure they will all be there.

“And, you know, something that is also very close to me about the Philippines is that I’m a big fan of Manny Pacquiao.”

Really!?!

“Oh yes, I am! I do a bit of boxing training. I heard that Manny likes to sing, so I hope that he will watch our concert if he’s around. I’m inviting him.”

What was your boxing training for?

“Oh, just for conditioning…just to keep fit.”

Right now (last week during the interview), he’s in the States promoting with Juan Manuel Marquez their return bout on Nov. 12 (Nov. 13 Manila Time) in Las Vegas. I’m sure he’ll be back in time for your concert.

(Addressing Manny) “Come to our concert, Manny! Be our guest!”

Have you heard him sing?

“No, I haven’t. It will be great if he will come to our concert and sing a song or two with us, a Westlife song of course.”

You have two kids. What about the other members (Kian, Mark and Shane)?

“Kian is expecting his first child next January. Shane has three children. Mark doesn’t have any children. He’s not married at the moment.”

Now that you are fathers, how do you look at music? I suppose you sing with a different feeling now.

“Yeah, definitely! Being a father does change your life. Having children is an amazing experience. You look at music differently from the way you did when you were single. It gives you a special feeling singing the same songs with a different feeling. When we go on a world tour, I don’t want to stay away too long because I miss my children.”

Do you sing your kids to sleep at night?

(Laughs) “No, I don’t.”

How do you Westlife guys manage to stay together and stay on top all these years despite the emergence of other groups?

“To be honest, I don’t know. You know, maybe we know what buttons to push or what pushes each other’s buttons. There’s really no magic formula. If there were, we would bottle it and sell it. I think if you want to continue doing something that you love to do, you have to help each other through and do your best to make things easy for everybody. Fourteen years is a long time. We’re coming to Asia now for concerts because you just never know what’s around the corner so we’re looking forward to this tour.”

Do you guys always do things together at work or at play?

“Right now, no. I don’t believe that at this particular moment any member has that plan. That’s not to say that things will not change because in time, maybe each of us will take a break and I’m sure each one of us will want to do his own thing. But as I’ve said, right now, not one of us has any such plan and we are just concentrating on the greatest-hits tour.”

Oh, you’re doing a greatest-hits album. That’s great!

“Yes, it’s coming out in November, after Gravity which came out last year.”

I read somewhere that you guys came to a crossroads last year and the result was the album Gravity. According to the story, you wandered into “uncharted waters.” Was it a “risk” doing that kind of album?

“I don’t think doing the album was a risk. I think what we meant was that, with nobody to compare ourselves to we’re making more and more albums, and we’re in ‘uncharted waters’ where the typical boy band would have maybe three albums and a ‘greatest hits’ one. With us, we did nine albums before doing a ‘greatest hits’ album. Every album we make is new and nobody has ever done it like this before. You know, the Gravity album is a pretty good pop album.”

I’ve listened to the album and the most touching song on it is Too Hard To say Goodbye. There’s an interesting story behind it, about the passing of your father and that of Kian, right?

“Yeah, my dad had a heart attack and died suddenly when he was at work, and Kian’s dad also died within the same year. It was a painful way to end the year. It was quite hard. What we did was go to the studio and write the song. It’s a song that really works. It’s a hard song to do, our special tribute to our dads. We were crying when we did it.”

You helped pave the way for boy bands. You’re grown-up now, you’re fathers now. You have ceased to be a boyband. How would you classify yourselves now?

“Maybe we should call ourselves, hmmmm, the Granddad Band.” (Laughs)

See you at the Araneta Coliseum on Sept. 29. We’d love to listen to you sing the old familiar Westlife songs.

“Yeah, we’ll be singing all our songs — You Raise Me Up, When You’re Looking Like That…all the big songs. We can hardly wait to sing all of them.”

If Manny Pacquiao watched your concert and agreed to do a song with you guys, what song would it be?

“I think You Raise Me Up would be good. That would be a nice one. Or any Westlife song he’d want to do. During the day, I would love to do a bit of boxing training with him and then at night time, he could do a bit of singing with us.”

One trivia question: Your full name is quite long — Nicholas Bernard James Adam McGarry Byrne Jr. Didn’t you have a hard time writing it during grade school?

“Oh, in school I didn’t have to write all that. That’s the name on my birth certificate. For short, you take the first and the last — Nicholas Byrne. My friends call me Nicko and then everybody knows me as Nicky.”

Anything you have to say to your fans down here?

“Oh, please remind everybody to follow me on Twitter. I’ll be keeping everybody updated on what I’m doing.”

WINDHOEK – With much anticipation music lovers and fans are eagerly awaiting Irish super boy band, Westlife, to take centre stage today to highlight the Hart van Windhoek festival extravaganza.

The festival kick-starts today and ends tomorrow at the Doc Jubber hockey and cricket grounds in Olympia. Co-organising members, Shane Feehily and Mark Filan, could not hide their excitement earlier when New Era’s Artlife spoke to them, at coming to Namibia, taking part in the festival and performing for their die hard fans. Westlife are known for their number one hits such as Queen of My Heart, Flying without Wings andYou Raise Me Up. The group has been busy with tours for their latest, 11th Gravity album. “We are very excited to come to Namibia. There are many places that we haven’t been to and we like to see new places and Namibia is one of them, so we are excited,” said Filan. The members explained that Namibian fans can expect hits from the Gravity album with some up tempo tracks and if you are lucky, some of those old time hits. “We can’t wait to see our new fans. We love playing live and interacting and seeing the fans,” they said.

The members said they never anticipated this much success, let alone worldwide fame and added that it was merely a year-by-year step that has got them to where they are today. “We are busy working on our greatest hits album, which will be out at the end of the year and along with that we are planning a tour next summer. We always plan 12 months ahead,” said Filan. If you have an unhappy member who wants to leave, the best is that they leave and he seems happier now. We are still in contact with him,” they said.

The festival also includes Freshlyground, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Theuns Jordaan, Kurt Darren. Today the gates open at one o’clock in the afternoon with the fun starting on the main stage with Koos van Zyl, Rohuan de Jager, Charlize Berg, Thysa Jacobs, Willem Botha, Karlien Husselman, Wambüseun, Snotkop, Heinz Winckler, Ludik and finally Westlife. MANILA, Philippines – Shane Filan of the Irish boyband Westlife has expressed interest in sharing the stage and singing with Filipino boxing champion, lawmaker, and recording artist Manny Pacquiao in their group’s upcoming Philippine concert.

During a phone patch interview with ABS-CBN News, Filan said, “If he'd (Pacquiao) like to join us on stage, we'd be truly honored. He's a big star.”

Filan said he and his fellow Westlife members Mark Feehily, Kian Egan and Nicky Byrne are really thrilled about their upcoming concert in the Philippines.

It has been quite a long time since they have visited the country, he added.

WESTLIFE STAR BACK BERTIE AHERN'S FLASH BASH!

Westlife star Nicky Byrne has defended his father-in-law Bertie Ahern's flash 60th birthday celebrations on Friday night.

And he also confirmed that Mr Ahern was bemused and upset by comments made by newspapers reporting on the celebrations in Croke Park which he hailed as the Aherns' 'spiritual home'.

He said: "Of course he is (upset) ... it's been known for years, even before Bertie was a minister, how important the GAA and Croke Park was to him.

"So it was perfect to have the party - and anyone can rent out a room there."

Despite the negative coverage, Mr Byrne said the former Taoiseach "enjoyed" the evening and that "95% of the public" knew his father-in-law "was a good guy".

"Ireland is in a bad situation at the moment. Is that all Bertie's fault? And the world - that's all Bertie Ahern's fault too? It is what it is but it's hard for me to watch. You have to move on," said Mr Byrne, who performed 'Daydream Believer' at the event.

Talking about the new LP, the band said: “It’s almost hard to believe that we’ve been doing this for as long as we have. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and are looking forward to releasing our Greatest Hits as a special thank you to our fans who have supported us throughout our career.”

The album will hit stores in both a standard format and a deluxe edition with bonus video footage. The tracklisting is yet to be confirmed, but both versions will come with brand new tracks.

WESTLIFE'S Nicky Byrne says he thinks bandmate Kian Egan and wife Jodie Albert will be great parents when their first child arrives, if their behaviour with his boys is anything to go by.

Nicky, who is father to twins Rocco and Jay, said, "I think they'll make great parents.

"On tour this year they were chasing Jodie around the canteen. They have a little soft spot for Jodie if I'm being honest."

Louis Walsh has revealed that she fell out with his former X Factor colleague Cheryl Cole over boyband Westlife.

The Irish music manager claimed he had a row with the Girls Aloud singer after she said something "derogatory" about the boyband.

He told Heat magazine: "Cheryl and I had a few rows on camera but not many off-camera.

"She once said something derogatory about Westlife and no-one slags Westlife off, I am their manager and I love them"

Walsh also claims that he was the person to recommend Kelly Rowland to be a new judge on The X Factor.

He said: "Three years ago, I said to Simon, 'You know who would be a good judge? Kelly Rowland', and Simon was like, 'Really?'.

"She's done it all. She knows how to sing and how to dance. She is a star in her own right. She is incredible!"

Meanwhile, Louis admitted he is also a fan of the other new lady on the panel.

He said: "Tulisa is different from the other judges. She is the youngest judge ever.

"I didn't know who she was before the show but that was because I didn't know much about the N-Dubz, but now that I know her, she is so honest, and unassuming.

"This girl is the total opposite to a diva - she is a girl next door. She's absolutely gorgeous - I love her."
